In the ever evolving advertising cosmos, a highly awarded director, Anthea Benton has carved a consistently creative image-making niche which has spanned over two decades. After studying Fashion and Photography, she began her film making career in music videos with her, then, partner Vaughan Arnell, at a time when, there were simply no promo directors who came from any kind of modernist Photography or Fashion background, no directing duos and, in those early days, no female directors. Working with bands who allowed more experimentation, she honed her directing skills as each project, was designed to explore many different image–making disciplines: one month would be stop frame animation, the next underwater, the next vintage hand cranked B&W. I wanted the experience to tackle anything and embrace all technological advances. The move to Commercials was fueled by a desire to expand our modernist music culture in to a world of actors and dialogue, where I could explore story-telling. The breakthrough piece was WRANGLER–DJ, the very first TV commercial to feature a Spoken Word Rapper and an entirely African American cast. This spawned a raft of groundbreaking campaigns for LEVI’s, STELLA ARTOIS, BT, ADDIDAS & IKEA. She went on to pursue her solo career globally, with campaigns for BARCLAYCARD, AUDI, EE, FORD, SONY, McDONALD’S, HYUNDAI, ISKLAR, NISSAN, TARGET, DUREX, HOUSE OF FRASER, SPECIAL K, L’OREAL, OLAY, SUNSILK & DOVE. More recently, Anthea revisited her partnership with Vaughan as a Pop-Up and created widely acclaimed HOF Christmas commercial.
